Outbreak of Measles in Sweden

Since mid-August 2026, multiple cases of measles have been reported in Sweden. The majority of cases are linked to the Urkult festival held in Västernorrland between 30th July and 2nd August 2026, according to the Public Health Agency of Sweden (Folkhälsomyndigheten, FoHM)(available only in Swedish).
The first update, published on 15th August, described five confirmed cases, three of which had a likely epidemiological link to the festival. As case identification and contact tracing progressed, the number of confirmed cases increased (31 cases were identified by 25th August). Cases have been reported from nine Swedish regions, indicating secondary spread following exposure at the festival.
Most cases have occurred among school-aged children and young adults, and the majority were not vaccinated against measles. Regional communicable disease control units are conducting extensive contact tracing and advising festival attendees to seek medical advice if symptoms develop.
Measles (link information in Swedish) is one of the world’s most contagious viral diseases, and spreads through airborne respiratory droplets. An infected individual can transmit the virus from up to four days before the appearance of the characteristic rash, and for up to four days after. Susceptible individuals may become infected even after entering a room up to two hours after an infectious person has left. Despite the current outbreak, Sweden maintains a high rate of vaccination coverage (approximately 95%). Outbreaks in Sweden remain uncommon due to the national childhood immunisation programme.
